As a teacher, I obviously spend a lot of time mentoring students. My mentoring duties extend beyond my time at USC — I’ve been training young journalists since I was still a journalism student myself.

YMCA Youth & Government

Every year, I volunteer for the YMCA’s Youth & Government program to teach high school students about the Fourth Estate. I teach journalism basics to about 150 students over the course of three weekends, the last of which is a full-blown state government simulation that my students cover.

USC Annenberg mentor

Before I became a full-time professor, I was a mentor to an Annenberg student in the 2015-2016 school year.

ONA Newsroom

At the 2013 ONA Conference, I was a volunteer mentor in the student newsroom. I was assigned a mentee and worked to organize the newsroom’s social media strategy and coverage plan.
