As a teacher, I naturally spend a lot of time mentoring students. But my mentoring duties extend beyond my time at USC — I’ve been training young journalists since I was still a journalism student myself, and now I’m a Trusting News coach. MediaShift J-School Hackathon

In February 2017, I mentored a group of students at MediaShift’s 4th Annual J-School Hackathon. The students were charged with pitching a chatbot idea to a group of journalists, developers and entrepreneurs. Our team won first place! Read more about the weekend here.

Trusting News

After I led USC Annenberg Media’s participation in research for the Trusting News project, I was hired as a coach in February 2019. The program connects journalists with coaches who help them devise and implement strategies to actively earn trust in the course of their work. If you request a free session, you’ll be matched with someone based on your needs and the coach’s experience; it may or may not be me.

YMCA Youth & Government

For 13 years, I volunteered for the YMCA’s Youth & Government program, teaching high school students from all over California about the Fourth Estate. I taught journalism basics and oversaw student coverage of a mock state government.

USC Annenberg mentor

Before I became a full-time professor, I was a mentor to an Annenberg student in the 2015-2016 school year.

ONA Newsroom

At the 2013 ONA Conference, I was a volunteer mentor in the student newsroom. I was assigned a mentee and worked to organize the newsroom’s social media strategy and coverage plan.
