I’m a digital journalism professor and founder of Stylebot, a fast, intuitive, customizable copy editing chatbot. Stylebot is used by newsrooms and journalism schools across the country, and our team is part of the Viterbi Startup Garage’s Fall 2019 cohort. I created Stylebot for my USC Annenberg students when I was the digital news director of the Annenberg Media Center, where I built the digital arm of the student newsroom, led students in the creation of an award-winning Instagram show and newsletter, launched the newsroom’s first app and spearheaded participation in nationwide research on trust in media.
I have worked in journalism for more than a decade and have developed a distinct philosophy that drives what I do: Journalists need to approach their work with more thought, creativity, humility and transparency. I’ve applied this philosophy to my work as a social media editor, mobile editor and as a member of the team that developed the award-winning BuzzFeed News app.
Before I came to Annenberg, I worked on mobile and social media desks in national newsrooms, from Yahoo News to the Los Angeles Times to BuzzFeed News. I wrote policies and best practices for new platforms, managed publishing and strategy for major social media accounts, trained newsroom editors on publishing breaking news on mobile and social media and worked closely with product teams to develop and improve the mobile news experience.
I started my journalism career as a reporter, working for newspapers in the Los Angeles area and in The Associated Press’ L.A. bureau. I then worked for the AP in New York, where I was an editorial assistant and trained as an editor on the national desk.
Now, I live in L.A. and am pursuing my master’s degree in communication at USC. My coursework gives me a grounding in academic research and enhances my understanding of journalism’s impact on audiences and on society. My resume is available here.
